Acts of the Apostles/Exploring the Gospel of Mark - Jim Cockerham

The Wednesday evening adult Bible study in Room 200 on the Book of Acts will resume on Wednesday, February 1st at Acts, chapter 21. An added feature of our study this winter will be the opportunity to view a DVD travelogue of historic sites and regions covered in the missionary journeys of the apostles. This audio visual resource is a six DVD set entitled “The Christian Traveler”, published by Reader’s Digest.
BEYOND THE ACTS STUDY, we will spend the remainder of the semester on THE GOSPELS, specifically Mark, seeking interpretation and understanding for our own times. (We will find portions of the travelogue series useful for this study also.) IF YOU WERE NOT ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CLASS IN 2011 AND WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US, YOU ARE WELCOME. You will find our informal and participative style easy to engage.

Men in the Mirror - Kevin Frederick

I will be teaching a brand new course this semester called, Men in the Mirror, Modeling our Masculinity on Jesus Christ. It is a course that I have written this past year for men and is designed to help us sift through the many conflicting cultural messages regarding masculinity and how we express our masculinity within the context of our private and public relationships. This course will identify both positive and negative messages that our society has taught us regarding how we express masculinity, and each week we will look to Jesus Christ and many examples of his exemplary relational skills expressed throughout the gospels. I want to encourage every man of all ages to consider being part of this course. I also encourage our men to invite other men from outside our church community to participate in this course. A draft of this course is being reviewed by the General Assembly Christian Education office and has also been identified as very useful with HIV/Aids work in Africa, as well as Masculinity work in the US and Hispanic cultures around the world. I will know within the next few months if this is funded for publication and our class this winter/spring will help me modify it for publication. As you can see we have several great options to build on and our hopes we will continue to build a vibrant program for all ages for two semesters a year.

A Faith and Film Experience (AFAFE) - Mike Sears

2nd & 4th Wednesdays, 6:30 pm-7:30 pm – During this Family Night semester (Feb-May), we will explore three major themes of our faith, allowing Hollywood to spark our thinking. During February, we’ll explore “the quest for God,” using the movie Contact, based on a book by Carl Sagan, and the movie Hannah and Her Sisters, diving headlong into the wacky world of Woody Allen. March will bring discussions of a “suffering servant. ” We’ll explore this theme through the lenses of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a great movie starring the young Jack Nicholas, and Dead Poets Society, Robin Williams at his best! We’ll finish AFAFE with The Shawshank Redemption as we explore the theme of “resurrection. ” The structure is simple. You’ll be asked to try to view these movies sometime before we discuss them. Due to time constraints, I’ll be forced to facilitate discussions with clips only. So, if you don’t get to see the whole movie before we meet, we’ll carry out discussion in such a way that everyone will be included and on the same page.

Think You Can't Draw? - Teri Bastian

Yes, you can! If you don't believe it, join “Drawing, Sketching, and Journaling,” a sketching and drawing class taught by Teri Bastian each Wednesday night in Room 400 following our Family Night Dinner. All ages, levels of experience and walk-ins are welcome every week. Occasionally, we'll explore using sketching and drawing in journals and diaries. Materials will be supplied. Just come and enjoy art.
